Session 8: BIA Clay Paver Installation Seminar
Instructor: Fred Adams, Fred Adams Paving Company, Inc.
The BIA Clay Paver Installation Seminar provides attendees with an overview of the major distinctions a paving contractor should be aware of when installing clay pavers. The discussion will address installation of extruded, dry-pressed and hand molded clay pavers. Clay pavers discussed will include square-edged and chamfered and lugged and non-lugged units. PAVE TECH’s Vocational Skills Training for Segmental Paver Installation course will be used as a reference. The nuances involved with constructing flexible interlocking pavements with clay pavers over sand and bituminous setting beds will be emphasized. Rigid pavements with clay pavers installed over mortar setting beds will also be discussed. This course is intended to highlight the major differences between installing clay pavers and concrete pavers from a contractor’s perspective. This seminar qualifies for 1.5 CEU credit hours towards the ICPI Level II Concrete Paver Installer Program.
Session 9: How to Become a More Productive Field Leader

Handouts with sample plans will be included.
Highlights include:
- Workshops on appropriate methods for dust control
- Basic methods to assess ventilation
- Use of respirators and dust masks- which are most effective, when and why
- Determining when a respirator plan is needed and how to prepare one
- How to establish and initiate a dust and silica exposure prevention plan
This seminar qualifies for 1.5 CEU credit hours towards the ICPI Level II Concrete Paver Installer Program.
Session 11A/11B: Estimating Strategies
Instructor: Charles Vander Kooi, Vander Kooi & Associates
The goal was to develop the “perfect” estimating system that recovers the “perfect overhead.” However, after bidding over a billion dollars in work personally, and conducting extensive research with clients and other consulting firms Charles decided that in reality there is not a perfect estimating system. As a result he has developed what he calls, “As Good As It Gets.” His system is a Multiple Overhead Recovery System (MORS) that is based on the premise that there are different variables on each and every job, not to mention the different expenses each company has that must be considered. Additionally there is a portion of your company’s overhead that must be recovered on each and every job. MORS was developed to consider the changing variables that are unique to each company, and each job, and to allocate the proper amount of overhead to the material, labor, equipment, and subs throughout the year in order to make a profit.
Course Outline
Four things a good pricing system does for a company:
1) Allows you to track every dollar back to yourself through your estimates
2) Enables you to compensate for different variables on each job
3) Gives yourself control over the job after you get the contract
4) Educates yourself to make sound financial decisions
This seminar qualifies for 3 CEU credit hours towards the ICPI Concrete Paver Business Professional Program.
